Background and release[]

News of SEVENTEEN's new album was first revealed by S.Coups on March 10 during the first day of the 2023 SVT 7th Fanmeeting 'SEVENTEEN in CARAT LAND' event, and was later confirmed by in an official statement by Pledis Entertainment on March 13.[1] On March 31, they dropped the first teaser poster, while announcing the title of the new mini-album as "FML", to be released on April 24.[2] A "hidden" version of the tracklist was released on April 3, announcing a total of six songs with three unit songs, two team songs and two title tracks; marking SEVENTEEN's first ever release to contain two lead songs. "F*ck My Life" was the first title to be revealed, with the second one unveiled on April 18.[3] The promotional schedule was released on April 4.[3]The official concept photos, "Fallen, Misfit, Lost", "Fade Mono Life", and "Fight for My Life" (all different plays on the abbreviation "FML") were released on April 12, April 13, April 15 respectively.[3]

Commercial performance[]

On April 13, SEVENTEEN’s album distributor YG PLUS announced that FML had surpassed 4 million stock pre-orders, becoming the second artist in history to surpass 4 million following BTS' Map of the Soul: 7 album in 2020. This came after SEVENTEEN previously broke their own personal record for the highest number of stock pre-orders when YG PLUS announced that FML had achieved 2.18 million stock pre-orders in just three days after pre-orders began.[4]

On April 23, PLEDIS Entertainment announced that SEVENTEEN surpassed 4.64 million stock pre-orders, setting the greatest number of stock pre-orders achieved in K-pop history.[5]

FML sold 3.99 million copies within the first 24 hours after its release, according to the Hanteo Charts; making it the highest-ever number of albums for first day and first week sales by a K-Pop group.[6][7]

It has been named the bestselling album in the world in 2023 according to the IFPI, having sold 6.4 million copies globally (including only pure purchases, both physical format and digital).[8]
